Privacy Policy
Last updated: 10 July 2026
China Expat Health ("we", "us", "our") is a health insurance consultant (broker) based in Shanghai that helps expatriates in China compare and arrange health insurance. This Privacy Policy explains what personal information we collect, why we collect it, how we use and protect it, who we share it with, and the rights you have. We handle personal information in line with the People's Republic of China Personal Information Protection Law (PIPL) and, where it applies, other data protection laws.
If you have any questions about this policy or how we handle your information, contact us at [email protected].
Who we are

What information we collect
We only collect the information we need to answer your enquiry, prepare a quote, and advise you on insurance. This includes:
- Contact details — your name, email address, phone number and, where you provide it, your WeChat ID or messaging handle.
- Information needed to quote and advise — the ages of the people to be covered, family composition, nationality or location, and your cover preferences.
- Health-related information — where relevant to a quote (for example, whether anyone to be insured has a pre-existing medical condition, or is pregnant). This is treated as sensitive personal information and is collected only with your separate consent and only where it is necessary to source appropriate cover.
- Anything you tell us — the content of messages, emails, calls and enquiry forms you send us.
- Technical and usage data — your IP address, browser and device information, and how you use the site, collected through cookies and analytics (see "Cookies and analytics" below).
You do not have to give us health-related or other sensitive information, but without it we may not be able to source an accurate quote for you.
Why we use your information and our legal basis
Under PIPL we process your personal information on the basis of your consent, and where necessary to take steps at your request before entering into or performing a contract. We use your information to:
- respond to your enquiry and contact you about it;
- prepare and send you personalised insurance quotes and comparisons;
- arrange, administer and support your insurance policy, including helping with claims and renewals;
- provide ongoing customer service and advice;
- improve our website and services; and
- comply with our legal, regulatory and record-keeping obligations.
We do not sell your personal information, and we do not use it for automated decision-making that produces legal or similarly significant effects on you.
Who we share your information with
We share your information only where it is necessary for the purposes above, and we require anyone who receives it to protect it and use it only for those purposes. Recipients may include:
- Insurers and their administrators — to obtain quotes on your behalf and to arrange and service your policy.
- Our service providers — including our customer relationship management (CRM) system, IT and cloud hosting, email delivery, scheduling and analytics providers that help us run our business.
- Regulators and authorities — where we are required to disclose information by law, regulation or a lawful request.
Cross-border transfer of your information
Some of the providers we use to prepare your quote and manage our business (for example our CRM and cloud services) may store or process your personal information on servers located outside mainland China. Where we transfer your personal information outside China, we do so only with your consent and take steps to ensure it continues to be protected to the standard required by PIPL. By submitting your information through this website, you consent to this cross-border transfer for the purposes described in this policy. You can withdraw that consent at any time by contacting us, though this may mean we can no longer provide a quote or service.
How long we keep your information
We keep your personal information only for as long as we need it for the purposes set out above, and to meet our legal and regulatory obligations. Where you become a client, we keep your information for the life of your policy and for the period afterwards required by law. Where you enquire but do not proceed, we keep your information only for as long as is reasonably necessary to follow up, after which it is deleted or anonymised.
Your rights
Under PIPL you have the right to:
- access and obtain a copy of the personal information we hold about you;
- correct or complete inaccurate or incomplete information;
- delete your personal information in the circumstances allowed by law;
- withdraw consent you have given (this does not affect processing carried out before you withdrew it);
- ask us to explain how we handle your personal information; and
- restrict or object to certain uses, and to lodge a complaint with the relevant authority.
To exercise any of these rights, email us at [email protected]. We will respond within the time required by law. We may need to verify your identity before acting on your request.
Cookies and analytics
We use cookies and similar technologies to make the site work and to understand how it is used so we can improve it. Analytics and advertising cookies are only set after you consent via our cookie banner — by default they are switched off. You can decline them, and you can change your choice at any time using the cookie controls on the site or by clearing cookies in your browser. Essential cookies needed for the site to function do not require consent.
How we protect your information
We use appropriate technical and organisational measures to protect your personal information against loss, misuse and unauthorised access, including access controls and encryption in transit. No method of transmission over the internet is completely secure, and while we work hard to protect your information we cannot guarantee absolute security. Please also note that email is not a fully secure channel.
Children
We do not knowingly collect personal information directly from children under 14. Where a policy covers children, their information is provided by a parent or guardian, whose consent covers that information.
Changes to this policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. When we do, we will change the "Last updated" date at the top of this page, and where the changes are significant we will take reasonable steps to bring them to your attention.
