AIA China Health Insurance Insurer
AIA China was the first foreign insurance company to set up in China, back in 1919, well before the second world war broke out. As a result, they were allowed back into the Chinese market for historical reasons (along with HCBC and Allianz) and are one of only two foreign-owned companies with a Chinese insurance license.
AIA is headquartered in Hong Kong and operates in 18 markets, which are Greater China (Mainland China, Hong Kong, Macau, Taiwan), Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, Korea, Australia, Philippines, Indonesia, Vietnam, New Zealand, Brunei, Cambodia and Sri-lanka.
AIA mainly focuses on selling life insurance policies in China to local Chinese. They distribute their products via a large network of their agents who generally market via word of mouth.
Insurance brokers and non-tied agents do not have access to their health insurance plans. This means you can only buy through one of their own agents.
AIA’s medical insurance plans are relatively cheap, however they do not guarantee renewal of the insurance and stress that their medical insurance products are one-year contracts only. What this means is if you got cancer or had a bad accident, it is likely you wouldn’t be allowed to renew your insurance plan – as happened to an expat who reached out to us for help.
AIA also has significant business in Hong Kong and throughout South East Asia making it one of the most successful life insurance companies in Asia.
AIA is also the shirt sponsor of the Premier League football club, Tottenham Hotspur.
